A Heart Consecrated to God
St. Agnes was a Roman girl who was only thirteen years old when she suffered martyrdom for her faith. Agnes had made a promise to God never to stain her purity. Her love for the Lord was so great that she hated sin even more than death. Her beauty drew many suitors, but she always said, "Jesus Christ is my only Spouse."
Standing Firm
Procop, the Governor's son, angered by her refusal, accused her of being Christian — a punishable crime. The Governor offered her gifts if she denied God, but she refused. Even when put in chains, her face shone with joy. Sent to a place of sin, an angel of God protected her from all harm.
A Wedding Day with Christ
Finally, Agnes was condemned to death. The people wept at the sight of such a young, beautiful girl facing execution. But she was joyful, calling her death a wedding day with Christ. She said, "I would offend my Spouse if I were to try to please you. He chose me first and He shall have me!" She bowed her head and was martyred, becoming a symbol of purity and courage for all ages.
